Dealing With Geometry Homework: Basic Guidelines To Consider

Many students find themselves struggling with geometry homework, in part because it is so different than any kind of math they’ve studied before. Instead of a set of rules, like algebra uses, geometry students must rely on use of a set of proofs to solve homework problems.

If you find yourself struggling with this math subject, try these basic guidelines to find success:

  1. Keep good notes
  2. Keeping good notes is key to doing well on geometry homework. This can include notes that you take in class, as well as ‘cheat sheets’ that you put together for yourself to complete assignments and study for tests. Consider organizing your notes by subject if you don’t already. For instance, keep a sheet where you write down all the theorems and proofs you learn that have to do with triangles. That way, you can easily reference it when you are working on an assignment.

  3. Work through problems
  4. Geometry problems can be overwhelming, especially when they have more than one step. Instead of getting frustrated, work through the problem one step at a problem. First, identify all the information that you’ve been given—write it down in a list of variables. Next, identify what you are solving for. Then, choose which theorems and proofs you can use to get from the information you have to the information you need. If this involves more than one step, write down each one separately. Finally, go ahead and solve the problem. Using this method will help you to develop a strategy for solving problems, so even if you get a question that is unlike anything you’ve seen before on a test, you’ll still be able to figure out how to go about it.

  5. Give yourself plenty of time
  6. As with the homework for any subject you’re struggling with, give yourself plenty of time to complete your geometry assignments. This may be difficult if they are daily assignments. But if you have several days to complete it, try to take a first pass at it right away, so that if you need to get help, you’ll have time. Also, nothing is worse than being forced to rush through an assignment when you’re struggling. It’s always good to have time to walk away for a little while, then come back to it later.

  7. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
  8. If you are having trouble with geometry homework, first try to identify what it is you’re struggling with, then go to your teacher for help! That’s what they’re there for!
